Breast cancer is the most common cancer in Irish woman, after skin cancer.  Breast cancer will affect 1 in 9 Irish women during their life. Statistics show women in Limerick, Cork and Dublin are at a higher risk of breast cancer.

Breastcheck.ie offers a free mammogram to Irish aged 50-69 every two years. The aim of BreastCheck is reduce the number of deaths by diagnosing the cancer earlier.

Late Diagnosis of Breast Cancer

Early warning symptoms of breast cancer are well known. Despite this,  mistakes can lead to missed diagnosis. Mistakes include failure to:

  • Recognise the early warning symptoms
  • Refer the patient to a specialist
  • Perform a biopsy
  • Incorrect reading of mammogram/ scan

Consequence of Late or Misdiagnosed Breast Cancer
